What Happens if You Miss the ACA Health Insurance Enrollment Period?

I wanted to remind that ACA open enrollment ends on December 15.

If you haven’t chosen your health insurance plan yet, I can help! Just call me!

But what would happen if you miss the December 15 deadline?

That’s a question that I’m asked on a regular basis.

Although missing the open enrollment deadline can result in having inadequate or costly coverage, you may still be able to make health insurance coverage changes without waiting until 2020 (although there is no guarantee).

The law recognizes there are lifetime events which will necessitate the need to enroll for new coverage. Each lifetime event in general include:

  • Divorce
  • Marriage
  • Birth of a child
  • Adoption of a child
  • Change in employment
  • You leave incarceration
  • You become a US citizen
  • A dependent who has turned 26 years old
  • A dependent who is now Medicare eligible
  • You gain status as a member of an Indian tribe
  • You move to a state offering alternative or more favorable conditions
  • Your insurance company cannot provide the same coverage in your new location

Obviously, you should enroll before the open enrollment period ends on December 15. The events above may not occur, leaving you stuck without coverage until next year. I can help you enroll on time and with the plan that best fits your needs. Contact me now so that you don’t miss Open Enrollment.
